How did I tell Tyler I was pregnant?
But first, I need to say something. I had a friend get called to the Farmington, NM mission (2-year ministry service for our church). Her mom (who manages her facebook account) makes it sound like shes in a third-world country. Granted, she lives in an apartment above a barn. Classic Farmington. But she has electricity and running water, which is more than Tyler can say about most of his mission apartments. I know New Mexico is, well, New Mexico, but heaven sakes! It's not like is South America or something!
Rant over.
So, how did Tyler find out?
Well, I would like to say that I thought of something totally cute and fun.
Buuuuut heres how it actually went down.
I woke up, I kind of had a feeling I was pregnant. I kept telling myself I wasn't, because last time I felt like that it was totally me faking myself out. I decided to take a pregnancy test for no particular reason, mostly to shut that little voice in my head up. I had one left over from when we were first married - my birth control gave my pregnancy symptoms for the first few months, so we went through a few tests during that time (all negative). I peed on the stick and set it down (sorry, but that's how the test works ... you pee on it) and the negative line showed up right away. I heaved a mental sigh.
I finished washing my hands and looked over again and ...the positive line was there. There was a little plus. I could not believe it. I started shaking and crying and I picked up the little stick and ran out to the kitchen where Tyler was.
I couldn't talk, so I just held the stick out. He stared at it for about 5 minutes. He claims he was trying to read it, since my hands were shaking so bad. But really, why would I be showing him a negative pregnancy test?! I think he was as shocked as I was. We both just laughed and cried and were hysterical for a little bit. I had work that day, but we sat on the couch for hours and talked about what this meant. I cried some more, Tyler might have cried a little bit. We had half-crazed grins on our faces for the rest of the day. We were (and are) so excited.
We ran to the store that night and picked up another pregnancy test, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.
We made a few decisions right away, like to wait to tell everyone until we were out of the first trimester. I called to make an appointment with a midwife (because when you barely have any symptoms, the idea of natural labor is so appealing! --I've switched to an OB/GYN). The funny thing about Rexburg is, they won't see you at all until your 8 weeks. This really bothered me, because I didn't want to tell relatives, but I had so many questions. I think they have alot of false alarms here, due to the insanely large number of newly-wed couples.
The first thing they did at my 8-week appointment was an ultrasound to make sure the baby was actually there. They actually said - "We have to ultrasound to make sure it's a real baby." The human mind is so powerful it can convince the body that it is pregnant, resulting in all the symptoms of pregnancy without a real baby! Apparently that happens alot here. I was so shocked/amazed/grateful when she showed me the baby on the monitor. It was a real and I could see it! Despite the plentiful symptoms of pregnancy, that was the first time that it really hit me - I'm going to be a mama.
We told my family when I was 8 weeks - I wish I'd taken some pictures. We were out at lunch and my sweet Momma just started bouncing up and down in her chair. It was so adorable, and I was so glad we got to tell them in person.
Speaking of telling daddy, on fathers day, we sent this picture to Grandpa Skousen and Grandpa Smith.

Oh, I love this! What a sweet post. You're going to love reading these in a couple years!
love it!!!
That's just crazy to me about wanting to make sure it a "real baby" and waiting for 8 weeks. one thing that my friend told me a long time ago about pregnancy tests...is either you have the pregnancy gene or you don't...so granted yes, i think there can be a false positive, but i would imagine that to be pretty rare, because like i said either you have the gene or you don't, your body can't just make that up!
definitely smart on waiting until you were out of that 1st trimester! for us who are now on this journey with you, not knowing until now will make the pregnancy much shorter! ;)
although not too sure if i could wait 8 weeks to tell immediate family.
again congrats, and keep the TMI updates coming!
Seriously, waiting until 8 weeks was killer. I was going bonkers, especially when morning sickness hit and I was so sick all day. It made school so miserable.
So cute!!
When I was pregnant they wouldn't see me until 12 weeks...and I used fertility drugs to get pregnant!
We're in the Farmington mission, what's her last name? And uh...most of the places in this mission really are sort of third world. I'm not kidding. Sisters aren't allowed on the res so it's not too bad for them but the Elders seriously rough it out here.
