the name game

When we found out I was pregnant, we had two girl names we loved, but not a single boy name we could agree on.  In desperation, we downloaded a baby name app and on our summer road trip the passenger would read off names to the driver.  If we both liked it, which was rare, it went on the 'master list,' which ended up being around 25 names long.  Oddly enough, neither Tyler nor James was on that list.

We didn't settle on TJ's name for what felt like a long time.  It felt even longer because we didn't tell anyone!  I think it was right around 28 weeks.  When I went to Albuquerque for my baby shower, I thought it was hilarious that my family started referring to the baby as "TJ" for Tyler Junior - little did they know, that was actually his name!

I always loved the name James, but Tyler didn't care for it.  I got the idea for "TJ" from Tyler's family.  We were all throwing around names at the camping trip last summer and my sister-in-law suggested Tyler James, so we could call him TJ!  Tyler and I couldn't decide if it should be Tyler Jacob or Tyler James.  One day I was in class and I started calling him "baby Jamie" and it just felt right.  We don't call him that now- it was my pet name for him while he was in my belly.  When it came time to write out the birth certificate, Tyler was convinced that "James" was the right name for our little one.

On to the second middle name- "LaMoine."  LaMoine/LaMoyne is a family name on Tyler's side, given to the oldest son.  Every other generation spells it differently, so Tyler spells it "LaMoyne" while TJ spells it "LaMoine," which is actually the correct french spelling.  Tyler's dad, Joe, spells it "LaMoine" like TJ.  Get it?  Anyway, we found out this summer from Tyler's grandma that the every-other-generation-spelling-change thing is just a perpetuation of a mis-spelling that turned into a tradition.  Nice.  At least my baby has it spelled right.

A little more info on 'James'- I have an uncle named James, but we didn't name the baby after him (sorry, James!).  But I DID find out from his mom - my Grandma - that he was named after her grandfather, my great-great grandfather James.

Every name we picked for our son was a family name - his father's name, my great-great grandfather's name, his father's and grandfather's and great-grandfather's middle name.

What inspired your childrens' names?

That's neat! I like the idea of giving family names to kids. I didn't realize his first name was two names, I just thought he had two middle names. Neat. CJ's name is Charles Joseph, and Joseph is his middle name so I just assumed. Anyway, neat.

I don't love any of my kids called by names but I love their family names: Isaac LLOYD after grandpa and DAVID Noah after my husband, and Zoe ANNE, Anne being a family name on the Larson side.

Well we aren't sharing our names, but we've been set on our names since about November. I like that we're both pretty decisive, so I don't really see us changing the names.

Girl: our girl name is a family name. I thankfully won this battle as the girl name is the girl name I've always wanted. So most of my mom's side of the family knows this name just because they know this is the girl name I've wanted for forever (if they remember it). Chris doesn't really like it, but he does like the shorter version of the name, that we'll call her, if she is a girl. The middle name is a biblical name, and picked out by Chris. It wasn't my first pick, but it has definitely grown on me, and now I love it.

Boy: Since I had such a strong saying in the girl name, Chris pretty much picked the boy name. I of course did agree on it, but not my first choice. The first name doesn't really come from anywhere, and the middle name is also biblical and also happens to be what MY name would have been if I were a boy! I thought for sure Chris would want to include his middle name: Martin into the name, since that is also his Dad's name. I'm thankful that's not the name!

Weird side note: Sunday at church both of the middle names were highlighted in the service. Weird.

So will baby go by TJ? Is that the name you picture him growing up with etc...?

Love the story behind LaMoine!

Boys names are crazy hard to think of! We like a billion girls names but for some reason I have a hard time with boys names.

Yea, we'll call him TJ. Although I can see myself calling him Jimmy or Jamie as a nick-name. I figure when he's older he can pick one of his names to go by.

One thing I didn't anticipate with this name is how annoying it is at doctors visits ect. when the call for Tyler. I keep waiting for them to call TJ.

I have the same problem with Noah, they always call for David.
