life lately

We have been having all kinds of adventures down here.  It's the strangest thing when I open google maps and see my little dot waaaaay down here in Texas, so far to the East.  It's humid and hot (surprise!) and we are all getting some awesome tan lines.

Most days we lather on sunscreen and go get wet - swimming, splash pads, squirt guns, even a bucket.  We spend A LOT of time at the apartment pool.  We got TJ one of those modified water-wing life vest thing that is everywhere this year, and he'll take off and swim all by himself.  He's getting really skinny from all they physical activity.  Eli likes to jump in the pool, then get back out, then jump back in....
The kids go nuts for this.  It's the perfect, low-key way to end the day.
Some days I just can't stand to have sweat dripping down my face anymore so we have to find something air conditioned to do.  Last week we visited Cabelas to see the fish tanks and the tractors.  TJ is all about trucks these days.  Any time we pass a construction site he is thrilled.

Last Friday we did something super crazy and mailed all of our binks to Grandma Alice.  We have been planning to to a "binky cleanse" once Eli hit one year.  I'm really glad we did - after a couple of days, Eli is totally over it.  He's self soothing like a champ and still sleeping through the night.
TJ finally asleep after a 2.5 hour fit
TJ, not so much.  TJ is so attached to his binky.  The whole thing has been super traumatic for him.  He asks about his binks before every nap and bed time.  I sing him a song about his binky and remind him that we sent all of his binks to grandma.  It's taking TJ hours upon hours to get to sleep, spending most of the screaming and crying for his binky.  We obviously should have gotten him away from binks when he was little like Eli.  Poor kiddo.  It's been really hard.  He used to love nap time, and now it's just awful for everyone.
We are also finishing up nursing.  I still nurse Eli first thing in the morning and sometimes before bed.  We could really stop whenever, I just haven't.  When Eli wakes up from naps, even though he doesn't nurse, he wants to be snuggled and sit still while he wakes up.  I love it, he just sits for about half an hour, then pops up and walks off to play.
This last weekend was especially eventful.  TJ bit into a laundry detergent pod.  He threw up a few times so poison control sent us to the ER.  The ER did literally nothing.  They checked all his vitals, then called poison control again, then had us wait for several hours to monitor his condition.  Tyler and Eli went home (we only have the one car here) while TJ and I had some lunch.  He was fine (physically), but he missed his nap.  After five hours he had a complete meltdown, the likes of which I have never, ever seen from him before.  TJ is so easy-going, but he was still feeling yucky and was bored out of his mind.  After that, the doctor discharged us. Ha!  I guess they figured they didn't need another screaming kid.
We had to wait for Tyler to come pick us up so we walked over to the cafeteria for ice cream.  Poor kiddo, it was a rough day!  The best part of the whole thing was TJ rocking no-pants.  He threw up on them and I didn't grab new ones on our way out the door.

We are almost to the half-way mark until we go home.  I'm happy.  Guys, I miss my bed!  I'm going to miss being here a little, though.  It's lonely without any family around, it's ridiculously hot, and our apartment feels so threadbare.  But I have made a tremendous effort to go out and do things since we've been here- that's a big deal for me, since I'm a homebody by nature.  We have done so many fun things and it's felt like such an adventure.  It's easy to find things to do here because everything is new.  I'm afraid we'll go back to Utah and just be boring.  I also can't help but love how much everyone dotes on my kids here.  It's so funny.  I'm not sure Dallas is where we will settle or not, but I'm so glad we came this summer.

Tyler got a job with a very small firm here as a law clerk. We wanted to come down to see if we liked Texas, and so that Tyler could network. The job market in Texas is great, and it's affordable in terms of housing so it's where we are looking at going after law school.

We talked about splitting up (I'd stay and he would come by himself), but I really wanted to come see Texas with Tyler and he didn't want to spend 2-3 months away from us. His internship pays, but not enough for regular travel home. We picked a one-bedroom apartment because that's what we could afford on top of our other rent. We barely brought any furniture (the rest stayed in our apartment in Provo). TJ is in the bedroom, Eli in the walk-in closet, and we bought a futon for a couch/bed that we sleep on in the living room. It's been a real adventure!

That's pretty much it!

Oh man, ERs are the worst! I'm sorry! We've been a one car family for a year now (for the third time) and it stinks, I feel your pain.

How do you do it with four kids?! I would go crazy. Most days Tyler takes his motorcycle to work so I have the car. I think of you every time I drag my kids to the laundry mat and think "At least I'm only doing this with two kids!" This trip has really taught me some humility. We've been so spoiled in our living circumstances.
